The Body Mass Index Calculator

For years, the Body Mass Index (BMI) has been used by health professionals to track weight problems and obesity in adults. This is a new term to most people. It is a measurement used by physicians studying obesity and uses a mathematical formula that takes into account both a person's height and weight. BMI equals a person's weight (in kilograms ) divided by height (in meters, squared) multiplied by 703. It can also be calculated as weight (in pounds) divided by height (in inches, squared) multiplied by 703.

Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have developed revised growth charts incorporating BMI that can be used as a warning signal for obesity in children and youth. By knowing your BMI, you, your parents and doctor can now recognize if you're overweight or have the potential to become overweight.

Calculate your Body Mass Index and then check the growth charts to see if you have a possible weight problem. If you have any questions about the results of this calculation, talk to your doctor for more information related specifically to your situation.
